Dr. Sudarshan K. Dutta

Dr. Sudarshan Kumar Dutta, a native of India, is currently a Scientist for the African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI) based out of Benguérir, Morocco. His present responsibility includes development of research and scientific evidence to define best nutrient management practices and building capacity thorough education, and student advising.

Sudarshan received his Ph.D. in Soil Science from the Department of Soil Sciences at the University of Delaware, Newark, USA. He received the W.J. Benton Award, 2011 and Best Graduate Student Award from Soil Science Society of America. He also received the Young Scientist Award from Indian Society of Soil Science, India in 2016. He completed his M.Sc. degree in Soil Science from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India with university merit certificate. He received his B.Sc. in Agriculture at the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (State Agricultural University), West Bengal, India with university merit scholarship.

Before joining APNI, Dr. Dutta has worked as Deputy Director at the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI), and was responsible for collaborative research and extension activities of the institute in South Asia including Eastern India and Bangladesh. In this position he provided intellectual and technical leadership to different research programs that my organization developed in collaboration with national agricultural research and education system (NARES) in India. The priority thematic areas included cropping systems design, crop management under stress and precision nutrient and water management. In this position he conceptualized multi-scale nutrient management research and upscaled the findings with national and state extension systems. He was also involved in research related to farm typologies with social scientists and economist on board. Dr. Dutta has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles, short science-based magazine articles, popular articles, policy briefs, etc. for different stakeholders.

Before joining IPNI, Dr. Dutta was a Postdoctoral Research Associate for one year at the Watershed and Hydrochemistry Laboratory, Department of Bioresource Engineering, University of Delaware. His postdoctoral research (May, 2011 to April, 2012) included use of hydrological models and GIS (ArcGIS, ESRI) for land delineation and development of soil map in different scales.
