APNI Tree Crop Workshop: Future Directions for APNI R&D in African Tree Crop Systems

December 1 - December 2

An intensive, two-day workshop designed to move efficiently from shared evidence to prioritized action, culminating in a co-designed program architecture for APNI’s R&D initiatives.

The APNI team and in-country partners will provide the foundation of scientific evidence and real-world challenges. Representation from the private sector, farmers, and external scientists ensures credibility, relevance, and fosters partnerships. Guided by facilitators, the agenda includes:

DAY 1: Evidence Synthesis & Opportunity Identification

We will integrate scientific findings from APNI’s R&D scoping phase with farmer and supply-chain insights to identify pressing needs, trade-offs, and emerging opportunities across system’s Resilience, Performance, and Livelihoods.

DAY 2: Prioritization & Program Co-Design

We will evaluate and select the highest-potential R&D entry points based on impact, feasibility, and market demand. Breakout groups will co-design the new program architecture and suggest concrete Minimum Viable Products detailing objectives, partnership models, and scaling pathways.

By the end of the workshop, we will have collectively agreed-upon R&D entry points for APNI and its partners, alongside a concrete roadmap ready for the final R&D plan.
